For Pope John Paul II it was a pilgrimage of hope. A journey of 33,000 kilometers, from Rome to the Asia-Pacific continent, where he meant to inspire, and then send off a generation of missionaries for the Third Millenium.
For the multitude that awaited this 74 year old man, it was the homecoming of a father, whose voyage would finally breach the distance that separated them only physically.
It was a mission-sending rite, witnessed by over four million people-- the largest congregation ever assembled for a Mass celebrated by the Pope.
